I’m Leaving! How to Pack for a Move

Blog Post | Moving Tips

Moving home can be an incredibly exciting adventure, but there’s no denying the stress involved. One of the most stressful parts of the process comes with packing all of your belongings to prepare for the move.

How to pack for a move is an art form in itself of which few people are aware. But there are several tips you can bear in mind that’ll make the whole process much easier for you.

We’ve written this post to outline these tips so that you can pack quickly and efficiently. Now you can focus on staying excited about your new home!

How to Pack for a Move: Get the Right Supplies

The first thing you need to do when preparing for a move is to obtain the right supplies for the job. You can’t just chuck your things in the back of a van and call it a day. That’s a recipe for disaster!

No, you need to get boxes, tape, bubble wrap, foam and many other things to make sure your belongings can be packaged safely. Many people forget to do this and simply use boxes they have lying around.

But if you’re serious about your stuff, you should invest in supplies that have been created specifically for moving. That way, you can guarantee the supplies you’re using are strong enough to withstand transit.

One step to bear in mind at this stage, if you’re moving soon, is taking into account COVID-19 prevention measures. These are vital safety precautions to consider before you move during the ongoing pandemic. Luckily, we’ve written this post to help you with this.

Prioritize Paperwork and Valuables

A good thing to do next is to prioritize important paperwork. These are small items that you could forget.

Make sure to create a file of your important papers and pack this first, ensuring nothing is forgotten.

Other valuables like your wallet and jewelry should be carried on your person where possible during a move. The same goes for these important papers. If you have to send them ahead, make sure you do so tracked so that they don’t get lost.

Pack Room by Room or Person by Person

Now, the actual packing! A good approach to take is to pack things room by room, starting with rooms you don’t use as much.

For example, you could pack all the books in your library first as they aren’t essential for day-to-day living. Or, you could pack up your guest room before starting on your bedrooms.

This method makes packing a step-by-step process. It also helps to do an entire room in one instance where you can.  This reduces the chance of something being left behind.

If you try to pack up your whole house all at once, you’re bound to forget about something under the bed or behind the sofa!

Another option that can be taken if you don’t have as many rooms to pack is to pack things person by person. You could pack a suitcase full of clothes for all your family members one at a time, leaving them only the essentials they need until moving day.

Tips to Remember

There are some tips to remember when you’re packing. The first of these is to label everything as you go.

This way, you know where to unpack everything when you get to your new home. If you’re going room-by-room, a simple sticky label on each box letting you know which room the things belong will immeasurably help you later.

Another top tip to unpacking comes with your electronics. These days, we all have a complex wiring system behind our televisions that can be a nightmare to recreate.

For things like this, remember to take a photo of it before you pack everything away. Then, when you unpack it later, you’ll know which cable goes where. If you can, it also helps to take apart any large items before packing to save on space.

For any larger furniture like sofas or chairs, make sure you wrap them up in bubble wrap or something similar. Though they’re not boxed, they are at least protected from the bustle that inevitably occurs during a move.

Finally, you have to make sure to do one last sweep! You need to make sure you’ve not missed anything in your packing. If you forget to do this, we can almost guarantee there’ll be a couple of items that inadvertently do not make the move.

Hire a Professional
