Moving Soon? 5 Things to Look for When Searching for Convenient Movers

July 21, 2020

Blog Post | Moving Tips

It’s no secret that moving can be stressful. Whether you are moving across town or the country the change that occurs when you move can add a lot of anxiety.

It also takes time to pack up all your possessions, move them to a new location, and then get settled. Reliable, convenient movers can help avoid most of the stresses that come with moving.

Read this guide to learn 5 things to look for when you are searching for trustworthy, convenient movers.

1. Recommendations

Instead of asking Google for commercial movers near me or office moving companies near me, first, ask your friends and family. Friends and family who have moved recently can provide a recommendation. They can tell you about their experience with the moving company they chose, the good and the bad.

It’s more than likely that you know someone who has moved recently. Give them a call and ask which company they used and if they would recommend them. If someone you know has had a bad experience they can tell you about it.

It is also possible that someone you know could have used a new company. Newer companies may lack a strong web presence. It can be harder to find information about new companies online.

Starting your search for convenient movers by asking your friends and family. This is a great way to find a moving company you will be able to trust.

2. Reviews

Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few companies, it’s time to learn more about these moving companies. Look up the moving company names on a search engine and see what the results are.

Most established, good movers will have many reviews available online for you to read. Read through reviews on the Better Business Bureau website for an unbiased opinion. Then seek out additional reviews on websites like Angie’s List or Google Reviews.

Keep in mind people generally leave a review after they had a very positive or negative experience with a company. Read through all the reviews. Take note of how the company responds or handled the negative review.

Also, look out for fake reviews. 8 out of 10 consumers believe they have read a fake review online last year. Fake reviews are left by the company itself, its employees, competitors, or paid-for reviews. This is a common problem faced by the industry.

3. License and Insurance

This is not a decision to take lightly.  There is much at stake when you move. You will spend money on the moving company’s services. This company will be moving your treasured heirlooms, furniture, family photos, and your children’s things to a new location.

While most moves are smooth, sometimes items are lost or damaged during the moving process. The moving company handles damage or loss of items during a move but there are different levels of responsibility

Ask your mover if they are licensed and insured. Some moving companies also sell third-party insurance. Third-party insurance covers extra items not covered in their basic insurance. If you are moving valuable items, this may be a good option.

Mover’s who have insurance can repair or replace items that may be damaged during the moving process. If an item cannot be repaired or replaced, they may give you a cash settlement for the current market value of the item. Know what is and what isn’t covered by your moving company’s insurance before you hire them.

If you are moving long-distance, 100 miles or more, your mover should have a USDOT number. A USDOT number is used to enforce safety regulations and collect information used in audits and compliance reviews.

You can verify the moving company’s USDOT number through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website. Make sure the number the company gives you matches up with the number on the door of the cab and the rear of the tractor.

4. Upfront About The Cost

The cost of your move will vary depending on how far you are moving and if you will need extra services like help packing, boxes, and tape, or help to unpack. The American Moving and Storage Association estimates the average cost of an interstate move at approximately $4,300 for 1,225 miles.

Moving can be expensive, and no one wants to be overcharged for a service. Yet, sometimes the cheapest company isn’t the way to go. Choose a company that meets your budget but will also provide good service.

Look for a moving company that is transparent with rates and fees. When you book a mover, they will give you their rate based on the number of movers you will need and the number of hours it will take.

Keep in mind that this rate is the base rate for their service. It doesn’t include packing, unpacking, or materials used during the move. This rate can go up if you are moving heavy objects or if it takes more hours than expected for your move.

It’s hard for a moving company to tell you exactly how much you will pay over the phone. But, they can be upfront and transparent about their rates and any extra fees you are likely to incur.

If a moving company isn’t forthcoming with their costs, it may be a sign to select a different company.

5. Answer Questions

Moving to a new home or office usually means making a lot of decisions in a short amount of time. Look for a moving company that helps you by answering your questions. Ask your moving company these questions.

  • How long will the move take?
  • What types of payment do you accept?
  • When is payment due?
  • Can I get in touch with the driver during the move?
  • How will you pack my valuable items?

A good moving company will be thorough when answering your questions. Make sure you are satisfied with the answers before you hire the company.
