Professional Movers vs DIY: 5 Reasons Why You Should Go With the Pros

August 5, 2021

Moving Tips

If you’re getting ready for your big move, you have a lot of decisions to make. There’s so much on your plate right now between packing, getting your new place ready, cleaning, and making sure that everything goes smoothly.

Moving is expensive, so you might be trying to cut corners when you can by forgoing professional movers. We get it, budgeting is important. But are you about to make the mistake of DIY moving?

Sure, it might sound like a good idea if you only have a few items of your own to take to your new place, but if you’re moving an entire apartment or home, you should leave it to the pros.

Keep reading for our top reasons why you should hire professional movers.

1. It’s Quicker

Moving can take a long time, even if you’ve packed and cleaned as fast as you could. Why waste time trying to move everything on your own as well?

Even if you recruit friends to help you move, it takes a long time to get all of your things packed in the cars or trucks, and you may need to take several trips to get everything from point A to point B in one piece.

If you’re moving a long distance, it’s even worse. Why waste your time with that when you have so many other responsibilities to take care of?

Professional movers have the equipment and expertise to take care of the moving process in record time so you can start setting up your new home as soon as possible.

2. It’s Safer

Did you know that DIY moving can be dangerous? It’s true. Heavy boxes and bulky furniture can be a hazard, no matter how strong you think you are.

How are you getting your heavy items into your moving truck? While ramps help, you still have to contort your body to get everything where it needs to go. You risk overworking yourself, straining your back, or even getting stuck while you’re in the truck.

This is even more important if you’re moving items from upstairs to downstairs. It’s dangerous to move large furniture downstairs. The person leading risks falling over backward and bringing the other person with them (and potentially being injured underneath the furniture).

If you don’t want to take that risk, hire professionals. They know how to move everything so you don’t have to, and they’re covered by insurance in the event that they get hurt. They also have all of the equipment that they need to make everything safe.

Even aside from the actual process of putting things into the trucks and taking them out, it’s also safer to have someone else drive for you.

Most people aren’t used to driving large trucks. They’re bulky, they have extra blindspots, and if you’re used to small cars you may not know how to park or turn.

It’s more challenging than you’d think to drive one of these trucks all the way across town, and it’s normal to feel nervous. Professional movers have the training to drive in a safe way.

3. It’s Affordable

While hiring moving services might seem like an unnecessary expense, at the end of the day, it’s still an affordable option when you’re comparing it to DIY moving.

When you move on your own, you have to pay to use bulky moving trucks. If you have a lot of things to move, this adds up fast. These trucks often charge by the hour, so what seems inexpensive at first can turn into a huge expense.

When you hire movers, you get their trucks and their materials alongside their expertise. You’re not wasting money to stress yourself out more.

4. Your Items Are Secure

Do you have anything fragile that you’re moving? How do you know that it will make it to your destination in one piece?

If you have any boxes marked “fragile,” you want to know that they’re safe. While you may be careful with the boxes, you don’t have the expertise that movers have.

While you’re driving the moving vans, will the box be secure enough to not bounce around? What about when you’re moving it into your new home? Do you know how to arrange boxes so everything is safe?

This applies even more to furniture and electronics. You don’t want to show up at your new home with a broken television, a shattered China cabinet, or your video game consoles in disrepair.

Movers want to keep your belongings safe and sound, so they’ll do everything in their power to protect them. In the event that something does break, you may be able to get it reimbursed (though this sometimes requires moving insurance).

Talk to your moving company about the safety of your items so they know what they should be careful with.

5. It’s Less Stressful

You’re already stressed from the moving process. Why not take some of that responsibility off of your shoulders by hiring professional movers?

Let’s face it: it’s a lot of work to move all of your things. You’re already trying to plan your arrival at your new place, you’re starting the decorating process, and you’re trying to get everyone in your household together. You don’t need the stress of moving all of your belongings, too.

When you hire movers, you can focus on your other tasks and relax a bit more. Let someone else do it!

Don’t DIY It: Hire Professional Movers Instead

Sure, you might save a few dollars by trying to move on your own, but why go through all of that stress and effort? Don’t risk injuries and potential broken items. You might end up spending even more money than you would have spent on professional movers.
